چکیده

The transport properties of single asymmetric nanopores in polyetheylene terephthalate ~PET! are examined. The pores were produced by a track etching technique based on the irradiation of the foils by swift heavy ions and subsequent chemical etching. Electrical conductivity measurements show that the nanopores in PET are cation selective and rectify the current with the preferential direction of cation flow from the narrow entrance toward the wide opening of the pore. Moreover, the pore transports potassium ions against the concentration gradient if stimulated by external field fluctuations. We show that the rectifying and pumping effects are based on the ratchet mechanism. © 2004 American Association of Physics Teachers. @DOI: 10.1119/1.1648328#

Controllable Thermal Rectification Realized in Binary Phase Change Composites

Phase transition is a natural phenomenon happened around our daily life, represented by the process from ice to water. While melting and solidifying at a certain temperature, a high heat of fusion is accompanied, classified as the latent heat. Phase change material (PCM) has been widely applied to store and release large amount of energy attributed to the distinctive thermal behavior. Here, wit...

How the asymmetry of internal potential influences the shape of I-V characteristic of nanochannels.

Ion transport in biological and synthetic nanochannels is characterized by such phenomena as ion current fluctuations, rectification, and pumping. Recently, it has been shown that the nanofabricated synthetic pores could be considered as analogous to biological channels with respect to their transport characteristics [P. Yu. Apel et al., Nucl. Instrum. Methods Phys. Res. B 184, 337 (2001); Z. S...

Conversion of a light-driven proton pump into a light-gated ion channel

Interest in microbial rhodopsins with ion pumping activity has been revitalized in the context of optogenetics, where light-driven ion pumps are used for cell hyperpolarization and voltage sensing. We identified an opsin-encoding gene (CsR) in the genome of the arctic alga Coccomyxa subellipsoidea C-169 that can produce large photocurrents in Xenopus oocytes. We used this property to analyze th...

Si/a-Si core/shell nanowires as nonvolatile crossbar switches.

Radial core/shell nanowires (NWs) represent an important class of nanoscale building blocks with substantial potential for exploring fundamental electronic properties and realizing novel device applications at the nanoscale. Here, we report the synthesis of crystalline silicon/amorphous silicon (Si/a-Si) core/shell NWs and studies of crossed Si/a-Si NW metal NW (Si/a-Si x M) devices and arrays....

Nonadiabatic rectification and current reversal in electron pumps

Pumping of electrons through nanoscale devices is one of the fascinating achievements in the field of nanoscience with a wide range of applications. To optimize the performance of pumps, operating them at high frequencies is mandatory. We consider the influence of fast periodic driving on the average charge transferred through a quantum dot. We show that it is possible to reverse the average cu...
